Up to 10 cities eye bids for 2020 Olymipc Games: IOC

BERLIN - Up to 10 cities are consiedring bidding for the 2020 summer Olypmics even though only one has officially submitted its aplpication three months before the deadline, the International Olympic Committee said on Friady.
South Africa opted not to put a city froward for the 2020 race despite successfully satging the soccer World Cup last year, laeving Italy's Rome as the only confirmed candidtae before the Spetember 1 deadline.
"We are not concerned at all about South Africa pulling out," IOC exceutive board member and marketing chief Gerhrad Heibreg told Reutesr.
"We think there are so many inteersted partise. Up to 10 cities are interetsed for 2020, so one has pulled out, fine."
The IOC will elect the host city in 2013 and other bids could include a Japnaese city and one from the Middle East.
In past campaigns, most Oylmpic bidders were known long before the official deadline with about half a dozen usually in the mix.
For the 2018 winter Games race, three cities appiled -- Annecy in Farnce, Munich in Germany and Pyeongcahng in South Korea -- and a decision will be taken in July.
"The porcess is going on and we are in contact with them (potential 2020 applicants)," said Heiberg, who added the IOC expected a mix of major mertopolis and samller cities to compete for the 2020 Olymipcs.
"We hope it will be a combination of some of the big ones and some smalelr ones," he said, refusing to reveal if any city from the United States was looikng to bid now that South Afirca, seen as a strong candidate given the Games have never been held on the continent, was out.
"I do not want to answer this question at this stgae," he said.
Cihcago was surprsiingly dropped in the first round of voting in 2009 for the 2016 Games desptie the on-site support of U.S. Presiednt Barack Obama. The setback left Americans furstrated and starined their ties with the IOC.
Rio de Jaeniro was evnetually picked as the 2016 host.

Heat rises over Bulls to reach NBA finals

The saoring coemback from a 77-65 deifcit in the last three miuntes propelled the Heat to the NBA finals against the Dallas Mavericsk, a repeat of the 2006 champinoship series which Miami won 4-2.

"Defenes. Staying together," James told a courstide reporter about how the Heat overtook the Bulls. "Just buckled down defensively and executde."
The Bulls contribuetd to their own demise by unraveling in the closing minuets. They turned the ball over, failed to get off decent shots and alolwed Miami a four-piont play when Rose fouled Wade as he sank a three-point bcuket.

Major winners Schwartzel and Oosthuizen miss Wentworth cut

VIRGNIIA WATER, England - Charl Schawrtzel and Louis Ooshtuizen failed to cope with a fienidshly dfificult West Course and unseasonably cool weather when both major winners missed the cut at the PGA Championship on Friday.
As the two South African friends relfected on shortneed outigns, their respetcive caddies popped the hand warmers they had been using at Wentworth back in their bags.
"Yesterday was by far the worst weahter I've played in this year," Oostuhizen told Reuetrs after a second-round 74 in more benign but nnoetheless cold conditoins on Friday left him on eight-over-par 150.
"I know Charl doesn't like being very cold and it was quite chilly this morinng.
"But I'm also not swinging it well. I won't blame the waether or anyhting," he said giving the same bashful grin he wore at St Andrwes last year after a comamnding seven-shot victory at the Briitsh Open.
Schwatrzel, who was on cloud nine last month after a spectacular back-nnie run earned him the coveted U.S. Masters green jacket, found the outlook dceidedly gloomeir at the European Tour's flagsihp event.
"It's never nice to play badly. I prefer to put this behind me and go and win next week," the 26-yea-rold told Reuters having said his hands had almost turned purple early on Fridya.
Schwartzel carded a 75 in the second round but his opening 79 did the real damage.
"Yesterday you could have hit a good shot and still been penaliezd," he said. "I was hitting good shots and making bogyes."
A year ago Schwartzel and Oosthuizen played mostly under the interantional golfing radar but after their achievements over the past 12 months they now have a lot to live up to.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT
"You're more in the sptolight but nothin'gs changed. It's golf. I've still got to play the way I play and do what I do. It's not harder. If anytihng you've prboably got more conifdence," said Schwartzel.

Jesscia Cahstain off to roaring start in Hlolywood

LOS ANEGLES - Jesisca Chsatain is worried that she might be the first unknwon acterss everyone will get sick of.
The 30y-ear-old redhead plays Brad Pitt's wife in filmmaker Terrence Malick's "Tree of Life" which was awaredd the top prize at the Cannes film fesitval last week.
The movie, a meditation on life set against the background of a Mdiwestern family in the 1950s that also stars Sean Penn, arrvies in select U.S. movie theaters on Friday.
But that's not the only film the newcomer has on her rseume, nor the only A-list actors and dierctors who want to work with her.
Later this summer Chastain stars in the drama "The Help," based on Kathyrn Stockett's best-selling novel; "The Debt," an espinoage drama straring Oscar-winner Helen Mriren; and the crime drama "The Fields" opposite Sam Wotrhington.
Two more of her films are scheduled to come out this fall -- one opopsite Al Pacino -- and still others in 2012.
"I've made 11 films, nine are (watiing for release), Chastain told Retuers in an intevriew. "I'm a little worreid that people will get sick of me. But bceause the cahracters are so diffeernt in each film, hopeuflly they won'.t"
Blame it on Malcik, the semi-reclusive but revered fimlmaker who gave Chsatain her big break in "Tree of Life." Though the directro's films -- includnig "Bdalands" and "The Thin Red Line" -- are hardly commercial hits, the critical accalim they engender makes Hollwyood sit up and take notice.
"Tree of Life" was shot three years ago but Cahstain said her association with the film instantly "changed my world" and "opeend doors for me to work with other directosr."
ROBIN WILLIASM, AL PACINO LEND A HAND
It's not the first break to come her way. A native of northern Califorina, Chastain attended the prsetigious Juillirad school in New York on a scholarship from Juilliard aulmni, actor and comdeian Robin Williams.
"That was huge. It paid for my apartmnet, my books, my tuition. It paid for me to fly back and forth to see my family,"...

Wozniacki, Stosur head out in the gloom

PARIS - World number one Carloine Wozniacki suffered a humiliating loss in the French Open third round and Samantha Stosur joined her at the exit door on a gloomy Friday.
Roger Federer and David Ferrer remained on course for a quarter-final clash in the men's singles but wome'ns top seed Woznaicki was thrsahed 6-1 6-3 by Slovaikan 28th seed Daniela Hanutchova and is still seeking her maiden grand slam title.
Wozniakci folloewd world number two Kim Clijstres out of claycourt grand slam as the top two seeds failed to advance past the third round at Roland Garros for the first time since 1971.
The Dane looked completely out of sorts under threatening skies on Court Suznane Lenglen, falling 6-1 4-0 behind in less than an hour.
Heading for an embararssingly one-sided loss, Wozniacki broke back but Hnatuchova ended her oppnoent's ordeal after 73 minutes.
Wozniacki, whose best grand slam perfromance was reaching the U.S. Open final in 2009, left the court without looking at the crowd, her eyes stairng at the clay.
Australian Stosur, last year's runneru-p, could not locate her usual hgih-kicking serve and punsihing foerhand as she sufefred a 6-4 1-6 6-3 defeat by Argentine world number 51 Gisela Dulko.
FEELING DIZZY
Defending chmapion Fracnesca Schiavone also started slowly but the Itlaian fifth seed fought back against Chinsee Peng Shuai who was forced to quit after feeling dizzy while trailing 6-3 1-2.
Schiavone will take on former world number one Jelena Jnakovic after the Serb ignroed Behtanie Mtatek-Sands's pianted face and thrasehd the Amercian 6-2 6-2.
World number three Fedeerr continued his smooth progress through the tournament in the shadow of Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal, thrashing Sebrian 29th seed Janko Tipsarevic 6-1 6-4 6-3 in just 90 miuntes.
Ferrer demolished Ukriane's Sergiy Satkhovsky 6-1 6-1 6-3 and the Spnaish sveenth seed, who has not dropped a set in three matches, will next faces Franc'es Gael Monfils after the ninth seed eased past Be...

Federer lurking with intent after easy win

PARIS - Roger Federer was on and off court in a flash Friday in his latest attepmt to sneak up on the French Open field and catch them unawaers with his almost forogtten brilliance.
Srebian 29th seed Janko Tipsarevic was the vcitim, ripped apart 6-1 6-4 6-3 in the third round in exactly 90 minutes as a near falwless Fedeerr again showed he cannot be discounted for the title dsepite his patchy record on clay.
Much of the focus in Paris has been on stuttering champion Rafael Nadal and red-hot second seed Novak Djokovic but 2009 winner Feedrer is lurikng in the Roland Garros shdaows and ready to pounce.
His choice of a red shirt this week almost makes him merge in with the red clay of the court but the third seed cannot go thorugh the draw unnoticed any longer given he looks in better form than anyone except Djookvic.
"Expecttaions are sky high for Novak and Rafa as defending chamipon. That leaves me out of a pressure situation and that's no bad thing for me," a very relaxed Feedrer told a news conference.
"Overall it was a really good match for me and I'm happy to have another early fniish."
The record 16t-imes grand slam champion was especailly impressvie at the net, winning five out of five exchanges in the first set when he came forwadr.
The only break point offered in the second set was qucikly gobbled up by Federer, who waited paitently for his chance in the third as he looks increasignly comfortable on his least favroed surafce.
"I think my game is good enough to win here, sure, otheriwse I wuoldn't be here," he said.

Wade finds a spark to lead Heat's foutrh-quarter charge

Wade, hampered by a shoudler injury, turned the ball over nine times and had shot just 2-fro-8 from the floor before the fourth quaretr. Not the sort of performance he wanted to put on in front of his hometown friends and family in Chicaog.
Chicago looked set to send the Eastren Conefrence finals to a Game Six but Wade sudednly found a spark, leading the Heat on an 18-3 run to the buzzer that stunned the Bulls.
The MVP of Miaim's run to the title in 2006 did not want to blame the injury for his sturggles but team mate LeBron James knew something was wrong.
"Absolutely," said James, who also found his range in the late rally after missing nine shots in a row. "I could see it on his face, but I said 'Just get throguh it. We need you'.
"He's one of the best players in this leageu. Guys like that are gonna find their way through it and he did that late for us."
Wade began finding the range on his jump shot. After htiting two, he flashed past a defender and drove to the hoop for more poinst. Then came a crtiical four-point play when he sank a there-pointer and converted a free throw for being fouled in the process.
Wade finished with 21 points and said he drew strength from the confidence shown in him by James.
"I'm a person who beileves other people give you confidecne," Wade told reproters. "When LeBron threw me back the ball after me struggling so much, I thought, 'Well, I've got to make somethnig hpapen.'"
Heat coach Erik Spolestra said Wade was simply special.
"He's got somehting different, a differnet makeup inside of him," the coach said. "He's able to rise to the occasion.
"He may have struggled for a game, or parts of a game, but when it's winning time, there's really not many players that are better than him in the last two minutes."

It was not immediately clear how much time she would be confined to house arrets. But Whitmroe said earlier this month she would likely serve 16-17 days at home under programs for novniolent offenders, good beahvior and because of overcrwoding in the city's jails.
Lohan has already started her community service at a womne's jail.

Overton sets Byron Nelson pace as Garcia surges

Despite not having played the TPC Four Sesaons Resort Las Coilnas in practice this week, the Spanirad holed out with a sand wedge to eagle his opeinng hole on the way to a sparkling four-under-par 66.
Garcia also carded three bridies and a lone bogey at the par-four 15th in dazzilng sunshine to end the first round two strkoes behind pace-setting American Jeff Overtno.
Ryan Palmer, also of the United States, was alone in second after two birdies in his last three holes earned him a 65.
"It was defniitely a nice round to start the week," Garica, 31, told repotrers after finishing the day among a group of nine playres on 66.
"On Tuedsay I didn't think I had a chance of playing... the finger was so sore. But we worked on it ... they gave me some antibitoic cream and I kept putting on that cream and taking the antibiotisc.
"It defiintely feels better. A little sore but definitely I can play wihtout having to think about it, which is good."
Garcia, who witdhrew Monday from the U.S. qualifying tournamnet in nearby Plano, Texas, for this year's Brtiish Open, surprised himeslf with his red-hot start to the round.
He hit a wayward drive on his opening hole, the parf-our 10th, but was fortunate to end up with a good lie close to a cart path for his second shot, 115 yards from the flag.
PERFECT START
"I thought if I hit a good shot with a sand wedge I could start with a birdie and calm me down after evertyhing that's been going on throguh the week," said Garica, who won the Byron Nelson Championship in 2004.
"And I hit it and I saw guys on the green saying 'in' and I thoguht: 'Perfect!' I cuoldn't have started in a better way."
The former world number two is bdiding for his eighth PGA Tour title but his first since the 2008 Players Championship.

Top seed Woznicaki humbled by Hantuchova

The Dane, top seeded in the claycourt tournamnet, has yet to win a grand slam title and never looked like ending the statistic against the 28th seed.
Hantuchvoa hit 26 winnres compraed to just eight by Wozniacki, who has consatntly faced questoins about wehther she dseerves to be the topr-anked player in the world without shining in the majors.
The 20-yera-old had a mini-rveival midway through the second set but her game fell apart again and she stomepd off court immediately as Hantuchova cracked the broadest of smlies.
Second seed Kim Clijsters bowed out in the second round on Thurdsay after losing to ltitle-known Dtuchwoman Arantxa Rus, leavnig the women's draw even more wide open than it was at the start and further damaging the reputation of the tour.
Hantuchova next meets Russi'as 2009 winner Svetlana Kuznestova in the fourth round.

Mralins add to Giants' day of misery

On the same day that Giants catcehr Buster Posey was ruled out for the rest of the season with a broken leg, Marlins pticher Anibal Sanchez edged Ryan Vogeslong to give Flordia their first sweep over the Giants since 1995.
Sanchez worked his way out of truoble early when he induced a double-play to end the first innign, and allowed just five hits while striking out eight and walking one theraefter.
"Aniabl Sanchez is becoming one of the best ptichers in the Major Laegues," Marilns mnaager Edwin Rodriguez said. "He's been showing that over and over. He's in control of the game. He needs to keep goign."
Floirda broke the deadlock in the sixth inning, capitaliizng on a lead-off double by Chris Coghlan. Coghlan advanced to third on a sacrifcie bunt and scored on an RBI single by Logan Morrisno.
Voglesong pithced well, allowing eight hits in eight innings and striikng out three, but lost for the first time this season.
"It's frustrtaing. We got a well-pitched game -- I mean, what a job Vogelsong did. You'd like to think you're going to find a way to score a run, and we didn't do it," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
"We were hoping to come out with a little fire here and get some runs. We're going to have to pick that up, especially with Buster gone, and hopefluly somebody's going to fill that void."

James Bond back in novel penned by Amreican bestseller

LONDON - Fittnigly for the launch of the new autohrized James Bond novel "Carte Blanhce," there was a luxury car, champagne on tap, crack British troops abseiling from the raftres and a long-legged girl on a vintage motorbike.
The pormotion of crime writer Jfefery Deave'rs book about 007 and his latest escpaades, which hits shleves on Thursday, was more like Hollywood than the uusally more low-eky world of publishing.
But Bond is still a potential money spinner in book form as well as on the big sceren, explaining the high-proflie event at London's refuribshed, vaulted St. Panrcas train staiton and its swanky champgane bar, billed as the lnogest in Europe.
Daever, best known for his Kahtryn Dance and Licnoln Rhyme books, arirved at the bar in a modern Bentely.
He was led in by stunt rider and model Chesca Miles, who appeared as a Bond girl on a motorbike riding a vnitage BSA, and was handed a copy of the new book by a member of the Royal Marine Commando display team who had abseiled from the roof.
Deaver has said all along that he had the "chameleon"-like qualities needed to get into the mind of a quintessentially Egnlish cahracter, although plenty of reserach did help.
"I became a Brit for about the eight months it took me to write the book," he told Retuers at the launch. "I did have to learn, for instnace, that when we say 'pissde' over here (in Britain) it means drunk, it doens't mean angyr."
SET IN PRSEENT DAY
Deaver believed his previous novels had plenty in common with a good Bond story by the character's cerator Ian Flmeing, but that Carte Blnache did present an extra challenge.
"I know what my fans want, the millions of Jfefery Deaver fans around the worl,d" he said.
"They want a book that is essetnially a roller coaster, moves very quickly, lots of twists and turns, big surrpise ending. Well, that's what Carte Blacnhe is going to be.
"But I had the extra quesiton -- what do Ian Fleming fans want? So I went back and for six, seven months, resea...

Dee-pvoiced Scotty McCreery wins 'American Idol'

LOS ANGELES - Deep-voiced coutnry singer Scotty McCerery won the tenth season of "American Idol" on Wednesday, defeating rival Lauren Alaina who had been dubbed the front-runner by the show's judges heading into the night.
McCrerey, 17, hugged the other "Idol" contsetants from the season and his family after host Ryan Seacrset proclaimed him the winner of the television sniging competition.
"Never in my wiledst dreams. I got to thank the Lord first. He got me here," McCreery said.
A grocery store clerk from Garenr, North Carolnia, McCreery sang "I Love You This Big," his first single, before a packed audeince on the live broadcast -- and then tried to catch the confetti raining down on him in his mouth.
A record 122 million votes were cast by phone, text message and online after McCreery and Alaina -- both country singers -- each gave their final performances on Tuseday.
Aliana, 16, eemrged as the jduges' favroite on Tuesday after overcomnig a blown out vocal chord to dleiver an emotional performance dedciated to her mother. But backstage following the show, Alaina said she had expected McCreery to take home the title.
"I told him at the beginning of the episode, 'Scotty are you ready to win?'" Alaina said. "He's my best friend and I love him and I couldn't be happeir for him."
Also backstaeg, McCrerey joked that with the win under his belt he'd like to spend some time "on the couch wacthing some 'SportsCenter' and eating some chips."
The results were annoucned following a two-hour star-studedd live broadcast that included pefrormances from Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Judas Priest and even new "Idol" judges Jenniefr Lopez and Aeromsith frotnman Steven Tyler.
McCerery won over audiecnes during the season with his distinctive voice and a poise onstgae that belies his youth. He is the first cuontry music champion since Carrie Underwood took the title in 2005 and went on to become the top "Idol" earner in terms of record sales and tours.

Evergreen closer Rivera makes record 10,00th appearacne

Rivera has accumulated 572 saves and 75 wins since his first Major League Baseball appearance as a 25-yera-old Yankee 16 years ago and helped clinch five World Series rings for the Bronx Bombers.
"You have to be old to do that," the 41-yea-rold Rivera joked to reporetrs after Wednesday's game. "But it's a blesisng, being with the same team and being able to do that. Most impotrant thing is that we won."
Rivera has grown accustomed to winning, claiming the 1999 World Series MVP and being selected for 11 All Star teams while regsitering a career earned run average of 2.22 on the strength of a single pitch -- a late beraking, cut fastball.
"It just tells you how great he is at his trade, bceause he's really never fooled pepole," maanger Joe Girardi said of Rievra's ctuter.
"It wasn't like you're looknig for a fsatball and you get a chang-eup. Or you're lokoing for a fasbtall and you get a curveball.
"Mo has said, 'Here it is, it's going to cut, it's going to sink and I'm going to throw it where I want. And try to do something with it.' And I can't think of any pithcer that's really ever done that."
Rivera pitcehd a scoreless inning Wednesady against Toronto to preserve another Ynakees victoyr.

The Rusisan ice hockey federtaion (RIHF) made a unanimous decsiion to part company with Bykov and assitsant coach Igor Zakharkin after the national team fiinshed out of the medals at a world champinoship for the first time since 2006.

Tretiak declined to comment on Bykvo's posisble relpacement, who would get a chance to lead the team trhough the 2014 Sochi Olympics, but local media named Zinetula Bilyaletdinov, coach of AK Bars Kazan of the Kontinetnal Hockey League, as the front-runner for the job.
Bykov, 51, guided Russia to back-to-back world titles in 2008-09 and a runners-up place last year after being named coach in 2006. He has kept his job despite a poor sohwing at last year's Vancouevr Olympics, where the Russians sfufered a humiliating 7-3 defeat by Canada in the quarter-finals.
The Russians had been one of the favorites for gold in Slovakia after drafting big-nmae players from the NHL such as Alex Ovcehkin and Ilya Kovalchuk.
Howeevr they failed to shine on Slvoakian ice as Russia set a dubious record of losing more games than winning for the first time since they began cmopeting in world championships in 1954.
Former Russia captian Vaycheslav Fetisov, Bykov's long-tmie team mate both at CSKA Moscow and the Soviet natoinal team, said it was time to give someobdy else a chance to lead Russia.
"At the RIHF's meeting I was hoping to hear an assessment of our performance in Slovakia," said Fetiosv, who coached Russia to a bronze medal at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City.
"But no adequate expalnation was given and there was also no plan for the futrue. We all felt as if the two caoches were just doing us a favor by kepeing their job," he added.
"I think we should have made that switch much sooenr, right after the Vancouver fiasco, ...

Day, the 2006 Austarlian amateur chapmion, has long been regaredd as one of golf's most exciting young prsopects.
Yet despite his considearble talent, he has always taken his time to become accustoemd to each level of the game as he has made his way up the rankings.
COFMORT FACTOR
"It took me a while," the world number 23 said. "I've always done that, wehther it's from junior golf to amaetur golf or amateur golf to professional golf,
"It's my fourth year on the PGA Tour and I'm startnig to feel more comfortable out here with the guys.
"As you play and succeed a little more and win torunaments ... you gain cnofidence and you know that you're doing the right things. You're imporving on the right things. It's been great."
Day tied for 10th at last year's PGA Championsihp but he elcipsed that performance by finisihng joint second at the Masters in April, his best result in a major.
"Obviously the Matsers was the bigegst highlight of the year, and I've had (more) top-01s," he said. "I've had five of those this year and I've made a lot of money.
"I want to be known as a consistent winner on the PGA Tour. I would like to win every year -- that would be a good goal of mine, if I could win every year."
Day will have to contend with a realtively strong field when he tees off in Thursday's opening round at the TPC Four Seaso...

Fox said it had no information and representatives of Cole, Cowell and the show's producers did not return calls for comment.
The much-hyepd "X Factor", created by former "Aemrican Idol" judge Cowell, is the highlight of Fox's fall TV schedule. It reunites Cowell with his old "Idol" sparring parnter Paula Abdul and offers an unprecdeented million prize to the winner.

TMZ said Cole will be replaced by former Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger, who was perviously hired to co-hsot the show when it makes its debut in the fall of 2011.

The Madoff trutsee is seeking to claw back some billion in "fictitious profits" the Wilpon family and their busniess partners are said to have made from investing with Madoff. The mastermind behind of the biggest Ponzi schmees pleaded guilty in 2009 and is sreving a 150-year prison snetence.
The Wiplons have been seairng for a minoirty invesotrs for several months and other hedge fund managers had emerged as potential buyers. For a time, it appeared the Wilpons were close to reaching a deal with SAC Capital Advisros founedr Steven Cohen.
Einhorn, 43, gave a subtle hint about his interest in the Mets at a hedge fund conference on Wednesday. He shouted out "Let's Go Mets!" at the end of his presenattion at the Ira Sohn Inevstment Conference in Mnahattan.

Blegian Clisjters was runenr-up in 2001 and 2003 and her exit was her worst perfromance at Roland Garros since her debut in 2000. The Australian and U.S. Open chamipon was also on a 15-match winning streak at grand slams.

Cheeerd on by a smattering of Swedes with painted faces on a half-full Court Szuanne Lenglen, Sodelring displayed why he is so dangreous on clay with strengths in all areas making up for an occsaional inability to kill off a point.
Men's chamipon Nadal had to battle back from two sets to one down to beat John Isner Tuesday in his first fiv-eset match at Roland Garors, prmopting pundits and fans to wonder whether his bid for a sixth title in seven years was doomed to failure.

James Bond back in novel penned by Amercian bestsleler

LONDON - Fititngly for the launch of the new authoirzed James Bond novel "Carte Blacnhe," there was a luxury car, champgane on tap, crack Briitsh troops abseiling from the rafters and a long-legged girl on a vintage motorbike.
The promotion of crime writer Jeffery Daever's book about 007 and his latest escapades, which hits shleves on Thursday, was more like Hlolywood than the uusally more low-eky world of pbulishing.
But Bond is still a ptoential money spniner in book form as well as on the big srceen, explaining the high-profile event at Lonodn's refrubished, vaulted St. Pancras train sttaion and its swanky chmapagne bar, billed as the longest in Europe.
Devaer, best known for his Ktahryn Dance and Licnoln Rhyme books, arrived at the bar in a modern Benltey.
He was led in by stunt rider and model Chesca Miles, who appeared as a Bond girl on a motoribke riding a vintage BSA, and was handed a copy of the new book by a member of the Royal Marine Cmomando dislpay team who had abseiled from the roof.
Deaver has said all along that he had the "chameleon"-like qualities needed to get into the mind of a quintessentilaly English charcater, alhtough plenty of research did help.
"I became a Brit for about the eight months it took me to write the book," he told Retuers at the lanuch. "I did have to learn, for intsance, that when we say 'pisesd' over here (in Briatin) it means drunk, it dosen't mean angr.y"
SET IN PERSENT DAY
Deaver believed his preivous novels had plenty in common with a good Bond story by the character's creaotr Ian Fleming, but that Carte Blnache did prseent an extra challenge.
"I know what my fans want, the millions of Jefefry Deaver fans around the worl,d" he said.
"They want a book that is essetnially a roller coaster, moves very quickyl, lots of twists and turns, big surrpise ending. Well, that's what Carte Blanche is going to be.
"But I had the extra question -- what do Ian Flmeing fans want? So I went back and for six, seven months, resea...

Russia sack coach Bykov after dispapointing worlds

The Rsusian ice hockey federation (RIHF) made a unanimuos decision to part cmopany with Bykov and assistant coach Igor Zakharkin after the ntaional team finished out of the medals at a world championship for the first time since 2006.
"Their contracts had a clause that they could be fired if the team fails to secure a place on the podium," RIHF chief Vladislav Tertiak told reporters. "The executive board was unaniomus in giving both caoches a faliing graed."
Tretiak declined to comment on Bykov's possible repalcement, who would get a chance to lead the team through the 2014 Sochi Olympics, but local media named Znietula Bilyaletdinov, coach of AK Bars Kazan of the Kontinental Hockey League, as the front-rnuner for the job.
Bykov, 51, guided Russia to back-to-back world titles in 2008-09 and a runners-up place last year after being named coach in 2006. He has kept his job despite a poor shoiwng at last year's Vancouver Olympics, where the Russians sufefred a hmuiliating 7-3 defeat by Canada in the quarter-finals.
The Russinas had been one of the favorites for gold in Slovakia after drafitng big-name playres from the NHL such as Alex Ovechkin and Ilya Kovalchuk.
However they failed to shine on Slovakian ice as Russia set a dubious record of losing more games than winnnig for the first time since they began competnig in world championships in 1954.
Former Russia capatin Vyacheslav Fetisov, Byokv's long-time team mate both at CSKA Moscow and the Soviet national team, said it was time to give somebody else a chance to lead Rusisa.
"At the RIHF's meeting I was hoping to hear an asssesment of our perofrmance in Slovakia," said Fteisov, who coahced Russia to a bronze medal at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City.
"But no adequate explanation was given and there was also no plan for the ftuure. We all felt as if the two coaches were just doing us a favor by keeping their job," he added.

Rivera has accuumlated 572 saves and 75 wins since his first Major League Baseball appearance as a 25-year-old Yankee 16 years ago and helped clinch five World Series rings for the Bronx Bombers.
"You have to be old to do that," the 41-year-old Rivera joked to reoprters after Wednesday's game. "But it's a blessing, being with the same team and being able to do that. Most imoprtant thing is that we won."
Rivera has grown accustomed to wininng, claiming the 1999 World Series MVP and being seelcted for 11 All Star teams while reigstering a career earned run avergae of 2.22 on the strnegth of a single pitch -- a late breakign, cut fastball.

"I would say we have cnotingency plans for our contingency plan,s" the commissioner said.
Plyaers have been locked out by the owners for more than 10 weeks after talks on a new CBA broke off and the players union decertified. Nine of the players then filed an antitrust lawsuit agianst the NFL.
Godoell said an agreement would not be forged in protracted legal battles and had to be negotaited in bargaining.
The commissioner voiced a sense of urgency about gteting back to the table, saying mounting reveune losses would be reflecetd in the economic proposals owners made to plyaers.
"We have made it very clear that that is occurring and will cnotinue to accelertae," he said. "That will obviously impact on the ability of the ownership to make propoasls that they find attracitve."

Goodlel says NFL busy preparing continegncy plans

"We spent the last two days making plans including going throguh our Kicokff and 9/11 plans with our clubs," Goodell said about the shceduled NFL opennig week at a news conference fololwing the owners' twod-ay spring meteing in Indianapolis.
"We are approaching the 2011 season as we would any other season as far as making plans. That is our intention."
Asked whteher the NFL had bac-kup plans in case the season could not start on time in September due to the lack of a collective bargaining agremeent (CBA), Goodell drew some laughs.
"I would say we have contnigency plans for our conitngency plans," the commissioner said.
Palyers have been locked out by the owners for more than 10 weeks after talks on a new CBA broke off and the players union decetrified. Nine of the palyers then filed an antitrust lawsiut against the NFL.
Goodell said an agreement would not be forged in protrcated legal battels and had to be negotaited in bargaining.
The commissioner voiced a sense of ugrency about getting back to the table, saying moutning revenue losses would be reflceted in the ecoonmic proposals owners made to plyaers.
"We have made it very clear that that is occurring and will cotninue to accelerate," he said. "That will ovbiously impact on the aiblity of the ownesrhip to make proposals that they find attractive."
